Can McGregor Do The Impossible?

Throughout history athletes have always done what they say could not.   Joe Namath and his famous “Deal with the devil” promised the Jets would be victorious over the unbeatable Colts and they were.  In the 2000 Olympics Rulan Gardner stopped a 10 year winning streak when he beat Alexander Kerelin for olympic gold.  1980 saw team USA do the Miracle on Ice as they beat the formidable Russian hockey team.  Did we forget after only 8 fights, Leon Spinks beat the Greatest of all time in Muhammad Ali ,but probably the biggest upset of my generation was when a 40-1 underdog in James “Buster” Douglas defeated the unbeatable Mike Tyson.

Take into effect that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is 41 and McGregor is in the prime of his career at 29.  McGregor is taller, has a bigger reach and walking around  about 170 pounds is just a bigger man.  He throws punches from weird angles and with precision.  Mayweather has trouble with southpaws, oh did I mention Conor was a southpaw.  Most importantly is the mental factor.  Is Conor McGregor going to get into Floyd’s head?

This is a paragraph written by Bas Rutten on his thoughts on the fight. “I know if Conor could beat Floyd it will be the greatest upset in sports history, and that’s what I’m hoping for. If you break everything down, let’s start with the trash talking. He’s going to get into Mayweather’s head. Then with Mayweather, he’s going to have way too much pressure on him. I say it’s almost like fighting a girl. Mayweather can not lose this. If he does, he loses to a guy who’s had his first professional boxing match. If he wins, well, he was supposed to beat the guy. Floyd wants the 50-0, and everyone he’s meeting, they’re going to tell him how easy a fight this is going to be. Every fighter knows this, the more people tell you how easy it’s going to be, the more pressure you’re going to get, because now you better do what they say.

So I know my boxing friends are going to give me hell for this article.  I have always been one to bet with my heart and not my head, but I think the kid has a shot.  I am not a Mayweather fan so on August 26th I will be pulling for the Irishman.

What Has Stopped You From Joining A Fitness Center In Sykesville, MD

I worked for other health clubs for close to 20 years and have owned my own martial arts and fitness center for close to 10 years.  Over the years I have noticed there are many reasons why people don’t join a fitness center or health club.  Hopefully I can help you make a good decision and get you on the road to a fitness lifestyle. The following are the biggest reasons people don’t join.

#1 Procrastination– Let’s face it we’ve all done it.  In fact you may be doing it now.  Working out is just what it says, work, but in the right case can be kinda fun. Take your time to find the right place but when you do, get started and get yourself fit.

#2 Commitment– Commitment is a big one.  Most people fear to commit to anything, especially something that requires working out on a regular basis. Most health club and fitness centers require at least a one year commitment, sometimes more.  Make sure the place you are looking at has short term options.

#3 Competition– I know a lot of people who want to check out the competition.  They will literally go on free passes at every gym in town.  That is your right and it’s a great idea, unless you never join.  Write down your criteria for your gym and weight you options.  Make the decision that’s best for you. Make sure you are comfortable with the members and the instructor.

#4 Spouse– “I want to talk to my spouse”, this is usually what people say  when pressured to get out of the office.  If this is the real reason, find a place that is a good place to workout for you and your spouse.

#5 Price– Well price is kind of tricky.  Unfortunately in this economy it is the first thing people look at.  The real big gyms can offer extremely low prices because they bank on the fact that you are not going to use their gym so they can get more people that are going to use the gym.  These gyms are selling space and not service.  Make sure the people are attentive to you when you come in. So more so than price what kind of value is the gym giving you?

OK here comes my SHAMELESS PLUG.  I want to offer you a chance to come into my gym and test out all of the reasons I spoke of and hopefully get you as a new member. Just go to shaddockmma.com, then go to the contact section and fill out the contact form.  I will give you the option to try a class or better yet get a one on one session with me for free.

So if you want great service, a place you can take your wife to, a gym you will be comfortable with, with short term commitment, and at an affordable price, come see me.

Bringing Service Back To The Fitness Industry In Sykesville Maryland

At age 18, 31 years ago, I decided to join my brothers in the health club business.  My brother Chris owned a health club and brothers Dale and Scott were working there as well.  The club was very successful and mainly because of the philosophy.  The club was took pride on it’s sales and service.  When you sold a membership, you also worked that customer out, made all of your own follow up calls.  You called and asked how their membership was going, and just plain stayed in touch with the customer, knew their name, goals etc.  Years later I went out on my own and began to work for some of the bigger chains in the Fitness industry.  I found they had a new philosophy.  They created a sales department, a service department and a concierge dept.  The sales department would sell the membership, the service department would work the person out and the concierge department would follow up with the customer.  Sounds like it is more efficient but I felt these clubs lost their personal touch.

When I decided to leave the health club industry some years ago and open my own Martial Arts and Fitness Center.  What is very unique is there is no sales, service and concierge department, there is only me.  My goal is to sell through my service by offering FREE 30 minute sessions to each person interested in my gym.  After they become a member I make it a point to follow up with them and make sure their progress is going well.  I make it a habit to find the latest and greatest exercises  and add them to my classes I also attend multiple seminars every year, to create the ultimate class experience.  I have created an environment much like Cheers ‘Where everybody knows your name.”

To come in try a FREE 30 minute session all you need to do is go to shaddockmma.com and click on the contact part.  Fill that out and send in and I will personally call you and set up a time for your orientation to the gym.

Shaddock MMA Fitness’s Home School Fitness Program. What Is It All About.

Two years ago I was contacted by a friend and former member who’s child was being bullied in school and he was looking to home school his daughter.  He asked me if I would be interested in doing a day class for home school children to full fill their P.E. requirement.  Because of this my gym started our Home School program and I am so glad we did.

The difference between our school and most martial arts classes is that we do not wear uniforms or belts so we keep the cost low.  There are also no belt tests which again keeps the cost down.  More importantly is we do teach fitness through the martial arts.  Each class begins with a warm up and calisthenics.  We teach the basics of Boxing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu and kick boxing.

Another big difference in our school and others is we keep the kids constantly active.   Instead of doing katas or breaking board we teach the kids through games and fun skill drills.  Also we teach a variety of basics in a variety of styles.  Most schools focus on one style of martial art.  We teach a variety of styles, each week changing the curriculum so your kids never get bored.

Last but not least we cater to the Home school life style and have our classes at 12:30 pm much like a gym class at school would be.  We don’t do LONG TERM CONTRACTS.  We do short term sessions to coincide with the seasons, fall , winter, and spring.  As always we are looking to increase our enrollment and welcome new students to try our classes.  Most recently we have been looking to start a TEEN MMA and Fitness program.  If any of these are interesting to you go to the website and fill out a form at shaddockmma.com.
