Shaddock MMA Fitness although small has been around since 2008.  To understand it’s longevity is to understand the owner.

Coach Shaddock began his boxing career in 1984 boxing in Golden Gloves competitions in New England.  At age 19 John began his career in the health club business working with his brothers.   When his oldest brother, one of the owners, couldn’t teach his boxercise class, John subbed in.

Over the years John had set his own path in the fitness business working in Vermont, North Carolina and eventually Maryland.  Taking the basics of boxercise and adding his own spin Shaddock developed Fitbox and taught it in Ric Flair’s Golds gym and Brick Bodies.  Being a NAHF certified trainer and Vermont State bodybuilding finalist, John took his weight training experience and developed IronBox circuit training class.

Coach Shaddock wanted to develop boxing class that included his grappling experience. As a freshman in high school he took 3rd in the NY State private school wrestling championships.  At an older age he received his purple belt in Gaijin Ryu jiujitsu, and won the Battle of Baltimore and Maryland Open grappling championships.  So for conditioning his most recent creation is GrappleBox.

Why Should Your Child Do Kids MMA and Fitness Class In Sykesville

I began wrestling at age 3.  I was a rough and tumble kid and can only imagine what I would have done if they had Kids MMA and Fitness classes when I was growing up.  I would have been there every day if I could have. Our classes combine fitness with basic skill drills and games of kick boxing, submission wrestling and school boy wrestling.  Unfortunately, there are a lot of reasons why people don’t want their kids to do an MMA class,  because the associate MMA with blood and violence.  The truth is the classes at Shaddock MMA and Fitness are different  then people think and quite safe. The following are reasons you might want to reconsider Shaddock MMA and Fitness classes for your (4-11 year old).

Although I teach kick boxing for a portion of the classes, the kids will never spar.   I believe it is not safe for young children to be doing full contact fighting. That being said your children will learn to throw punches and kicks correctly and to be able to hit the bags.

I also have a portion of the classes where I teach a submission fighting section similar to jiujitsu.  I do not teach submissions however.  I teach basic positioning and escapes.  I feel children at a young age should not be performing submissions on each other because it could cause injury.

In the wrestling portion of the class we teach school boy style wrestling that they do in high school and follow all rules of competition. Your children will learn the basics.

Unlike most sports now a days where everyone gets a trophy we see the importance of winning and losing.  We have a variety of games that the kids play that have a winner and loser.  I even have one on one competitions in wrestling and submission grappling where the kids compete for points.

In an age with video games, cell phones and basically non-active children, I think a class like this is very important.  With the growing problems of bullying in the schools it is imperative that our kids feel confident enough to stand up for themselves.

Shaddock MMA Fitness Is Revolutionizing Gyms In Carroll County Maryland

I was in the health club business for close to 20 years, and there are a lot of things I always said I would change if I ever got my own gym.  After close to 10 years of owning my own  martial arts and fitness business I am finally at a point where I can change them for the better.  When you join Shaddock MMA Fitness now you will notice some changes not offered by other gyms.

NO LONG TERM CONTRACTS- One of the things that I felt was bad for the customer, was the long term contracts for customers, especially for the ones who end up dropping off.  At Shaddock MMA Fitness all of our memberships are short term.  We have nothing longer than 3 months at a time. I feel it’s my responsibility to keep you as a member.


PAY FOR WHAT YOU USE- At most health clubs whether your in the club everyday or in the club once per week you pay the same amount of money.  That doesn’t seem fair.  At Shaddock MMA Fitness we have memberships for one day per week, two days per week or unlimited  use memberships.  We give you the flexibility to use the gym as much or as little you want. This is the way it should be, and the way it is at my gym.

Making Martial Arts Fun In Sykesville, MD

We do things a little differently at Shaddock MMA Fitness.  I have developed a class that exposes children to multiple martial arts through games and fun skill drills.  This is not a traditional martial arts program.  No uniforms, no belts, no bowing, just basic self defense and fitness.  The program includes basics of kick boxing, schoolboy wrestling and no gi jiujitsu.  The class also includes a cardiovascular warm up with fitness exercises.   Your child will be exposed to multiple styles while getting fit.  I change the activity every 10 minutes or so to keep them moving so they don’t get bored.  Besides Saturday classes I work with home school children to help with the Physical Education portion of their school curriculum.  If this sounds like something you are interested in I am doing early registration our fall session beginning in September.  Feel free to contact me at shaddockmma@comcast.net.

Trying to Relive The Glory Days In Sykesville Maryland

Finding out your not in the type of shape you used to be in is a hard pill to swallow.  You go from a star athlete, get married, have kids and 20-30 pounds later it hits you hard.  The biggest problem we have is when we decide to workout again we go back to what we remember we did 10,15, 20 years ago.   Your brain thinks “I used to run 5 miles a day,  bench 300 pounds, do 100 push ups” , but the reality is you can’t do that anymore.

Unfortunately we all have pride and an ego.  No one wants to go in the gym and pick up the 5 pound weights or get caught walking on the treadmill.  That old adage “No pain, No Gain runs through your head and we push ourselves way harder than we should.   So we lift too heavy, run to hard, aerobicise too long, and then wake up sore.   Guess what after that hard “come back” workout, we quit. I’m telling you it doesn’t have to be that way.

Taking That First Step Is The Hardest In Sykesville, Maryland

No matter what you do in life, trying something for the first time is scary.  Meeting new people and doing a new activity is very frightening.  It’s because of this reason that we have created the FREE 30 minute session.  I want to make it as easy and comfortable for you to come try the gym. During your session I basically walk you through a class.  We go over footwork, how to throw a punch, and how to hit the bags.   This way when you come to class you will feel at ease that you know the basics.

When you do come to class, I recommend doing half of the time that the other students are doing.  You should compete with yourself and not anyone else.   When you come in to our class you will find they are everyday people.  We have some heavy people trying to lose weight, some skinny people trying to gain muscle, and some people who are just trying to work on their cardiovascular endurance.
