My boxing workshop will be starting this Saturday April 1st at 4 pm.  The purpose of this workshop is to teach beginners to be able to spar.  Although this is the objective of most coming to this event, I assure you it will not just be people flailing at each other.

They way my brothers and I learned was sink or swim.  We were thrown in the ring on day one, and learned to box the hard way.  I don’t agree with this type of teaching.  What I have done is picked 6 elements of boxing that will enhance your skills and make you better at all aspects of boxing.  Each session is going to focus on a different component of the sweet science.

Price and Value Of Your Fitness and Martial Arts Membership In Sykesville MD

In these economic times, understandably people are looking for the best price in anything.  Sometimes price makes sense.  Everyone likes a deal !  In the case of your health and fitness and self defense, you should really look at the value.  There are a lot of chain health clubs and McDojos out there boasting to be the best but what are you really gaining?

When I compare price to value, it will seem confusing, but here me out.  Is a $30 a month membership to gym you join worth it?   Are you getting service, instruction, and motivation?  If you don’t want or need any of those, then yes $30 per month is awesome.  For the many people I have met who have spent $30 a month and never go, it is wasted money.  At my gym you can train in small groups (10-15), or you can do personal training.  It’s not $30 a month, but you will see results.  What is better health, a slimmer waist line, a lower heart rate worth to you?  Can you put a price on that?

As far as the McDojos, and there are a few in my area, I look at the value in a different way.  I don’t charge for testing, belts etc.  I teach fitness through self defense.  You will learn how to defend yourself and be fit.  I don’t boast a guaranteed black belt in 3 years, but you will learn to defend yourself.  You will have an owner who is the instructor.  An owner who will roll with and spar with you.  You will learn hands on.  Having an owner on site helps to make changes when necessary to make the gym and the customers experience better.

Shaddock MMA to changing fitness in Sykesville Maryland

When I started Shaddock MMA I started with a fighting gym.  We had boxers, MMA fighters and a grappling team.  I did enjoy my coaching time but have found that my true passion was the grind.  The training for the fights was what I enjoyed most.   Shaddock MMA is going to become the areas first Fitness Dojo.   Although teaching fitness, we also focus on proper self defense technique.

 

I started going to a jiujitsu dojo to get in shape and lose weight.  I was on a trade out membership and was teaching his fighters to box and learning jiujitsu.  When he decided to leave the gym, I took over the lease and Shaddock MMA was born.  I find there are many people who don’t like gyms and are looking for a great way to get in shape.  We have all of the great training methods of boxing, Thai boxing, Wrestling, jijjitsu, and other martial arts without the full contact.   If you are older and have always wanted to train like a fighter, but didn’t want to get hit we are the gym for you.

Better Than CrossFit In Sykesville, MD

I have been teaching Fitbox, MMAFit, Fitbox Circuit and Outdoor conditioning for years.  I find it funny when this New Crossfit class gets a tone of attention as a NEW fad and new type of class.   Circuit classes have been around for years, in fact my older brother Chris started a class called boxercize incorporating boxing and circuit fitness in one class.  But honestly I think the classes at Shaddock MMA Fitness although not as well known are better and here is why.

CrossFit classes incorporate a lot of big body movements, like deadlifts, squats and other lifting exercises better suited for younger, fit athletes and better if highly supervised.  In most CrossFit classes it is usually one instructor so poor form can be much of a factor.  Being an instructor, I make sure my students are safe first, it is important when dealing with multiple fitness levels that you do make sure everyone can do the exercises.

The Origin Of Shaddock MMA Fitness In Sykesville, Maryland

10606524_10152405002263026_8561909990326982636_n Eight years ago I was in the health club business.  Even though I was a salesman at a fitness center, it was very hard to workout.   The reason being If you are working out and a potential sale comes in you may lose money so to be honest you don’t work out. Also you don’t have much time to eat and you eat fast food.  What happened is I gained weight and was out of shape.  I was like most people today, bored with weights and looking for motivation to get fit.

I had wrestled in high school so I looked into jiujitsu, and found a place near my house.  The deal was if I taught the instructors students to box I could train for free.   A few months into the training the owner of the jiujitsu gym asked if I wanted to go with him to Columbia and he was going to close the Sykesville gym. When I said I wanted to keep training in Sykesville he asked me if I wanted to take over the lease and Shaddock MMA Fitness was born.

Throughout my life I had been influenced by my 3 older brothers.  All 3 have been state champion wrestlers and boxers.  I also had the opportunity to work with them and learn about the health and fitness business.  Their influence has helped me develop my gym and gym programs.

Most people today are looking for the easy way to get fit.   Diet plans don’t work, once people quit them and they will, they put on more weight then they originally started the diet.  Health clubs don’t work, their idea is get as many people to join the gym, that won’t use it so you can sell more memberships and it doesn’t get over crowded.  Fitness videos work temporarily until you sell it on craigslist.  Treadmills and elipticals  turn into coat hangers a few months after their purchase. Well what’s the alternative?

The alternative is Shaddock MMA Fitness.  We do personal training either one on one or group training classes.  We are a small gym so you really get the one on one attention.  We also have catch wrestling , boxing sparring as well as a variety of fitness classes.

Some have asked what was the biggest reason for me to get involved in Combat Athletics and fitness.  The truth is my father died of a heart attack when i was 20.  He never got to see any of his sons get married or meet any of his grandchildren.  My goal is for me to walk my girls down the aisle, and to do so I need to keep fit.  I hope this can motivate at least one person to get fit, then I know I have done my job.

I listen to many motivational speakers, and one speaker Anthony Robbins says a particular line.  He states “When would NOW be a good time to get started.”  When starting on a fitness program it’s easy to make excuses to not get started.

I want to wait till the kids are out of school.  I want to wait till after my vacation.  I want to wait till I am feeling 100%.  I want to wait till I am done with my diet.
