I was watching a blog by John Hackleman, legendary coach of Chuck Liddel. In his latest blog John poses the question is your art a martial art a partial art? Now I am paraphrasing but he states that for a martial art to be a complete art it has to have 4 components. A striking art (boxing or Muay Thai), a wrestling art for take downs and break downs, jiujitsu for submissions, and just as importantly you need to incorporate fitness as part or your art. There is a quote “fatigue makes cowards of us all.”, and if you are too tired to fight then you cannot defend yourself. If your training is missing one of the 4 components your style is not complete.
When asked what martial art he recommended, Navy Seal Jacko Willink recommended in this order “Brazilian jiujitsu, followed by western boxing, Muay Thai, and wrestling(the type you see in the Olympics, not the WWE-No disrespect to the WWE).

Kids today are different from when you and I grew up. I can remember being outside most of the day, on a bike playing in the woods etc. We played football and baseball with the other neighborhood kids. Todays generation is much different. With cell phones, Ipods, and video games it’s no wonder our kids are less active. “The United States landed 47th out of 50 nations when comparing fitness results among the world’s children, with Canada coming in 19th — a far better result than their neighbors to the south — based on data in the study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. ”
Well at my gym I offer a variety of activities for the kids. The younger kids do our kids MMA class which offers a variety of martial arts through games and skill drills. For the for mature teenage kids they can do our boxing fitness classes. The beauty of our program is in it’s flexibility. The maximum agreement is ONLY for 3 months. We also offer affordable memberships for kids that can only come in once or twice a week. If you are looking to get your kids active fill out the contact form on shaddockmma.com. I look forward to having your kids come take class.
For those who don’t already know, I am the owner of Shaddock MMA Fitness in Sykesville, MD. We have the best boxing fitness program in Carroll County Maryland.
Even though this is the case, as an owner I did notice that people have been hesitating to move forward and join my gym. I have gone out of my way to design memberships that will overcome any obstacle that could keep someone from joining. If you are considering joining but have concerns read on.
TOO MUCH MONEY–Money is usually the biggest obstacle that people come up with for the reason they can’t join. We have added new memberships that will fit everyone’s budget. Our most economical membership cost as little at $1.20 per day.
I DON’T WANT TO COMMIT TO A YEAR OR TWO- Most people are upset about doing long term commitments at fitness centers. A lot of times they commit for a short time and then get billed even though they no longer use the gym. At Shaddock MMA the longest commitment is 3 months.
COMPETITION- In the area you will not find a more experienced boxing fitness instructor than myself. I was a two time VT State Golden Gloves finalist and the New England Diamond Belt boxing champion. I have been teaching boxing fitness for 30 years. As a USA certified boxing coach I have trained and cornered many boxing and MMA fighters. I was involved in the fitness industry for most of my life. I am an NAHF certified personal trainer.

If you are looking for a boxing fitness class nowadays you can find one in most gyms. There have even been some boxing fitness gyms opening up. All are good workouts in their own right, but do they actually teach the art of boxing? The truth of the matter is most of the gyms hire aerobic instructors to teach boxing like movements to do to aerobic dance music. But they don’t actually teach boxing. Shaddock MMA Fitness is something different.
Coach Shaddock has been involved in boxing for over 30 years. A USA Boxing Certified coach John’s class teaches the basics of boxing from soup to nuts. You will learn footwork, basic punches, defense and how to hit the various bags that hang at the gym. So you will not only get a fantastic workout but you will also learn how to defend yourself through the art of boxing.
The best thing about any of the classes is they are for all ages, all fitness levels, and is good for beginners and advanced students alike. There is something for everyone in the family. Before you sign up at any of the other gyms, come try the best first, Shaddock MMA Fitness. To make sure you feel comfortable taking the class I am offering a FREE one on one training session and orientation on the equipment. Just go to shaddockmma.com and fill out the contact form and I will contact you to set up your FREE training session. I hope to see you in the gym.

In the past motivation was never a problem. I was always training for an event or had a goal. From making the football team, to winning the states at wrestling, to winning the Golden Gloves championships. There was always something to shoot for, so to get up and run and lift was no problem at all.
As we get older the goals change, they are not quite as sexy. “I want to lose weight”, “I want to lower my cholesterol”, Basically “I don’t want to die”. Well goals like this are important but they aren’t measurable, there seems to be no end game and so it’s just hard to get pumped up for in the morning. All of us, especially former athletes need that push.
One of the best ways to make it easier to get started is to get a workout partner. Someone to push you and make you work harder. Someone to get you up even when you don’t want to someone to push you. I went out and got myself a workout partner Mac. Mac is my Australian cattle dog. Mac wakes me up in the morning to run, and take him on multiple walks/runs throughout the day. Mac is the perfect training partner as he doesn’t care if it’s raining, or what he will get me to run with him anyhow.
If you don’t want to get a dog you can get a friend to train with you, keep you honest. The key is you want to make sure your friend has the same work ethic as you. The other way to go is to get yourself a trainer. I will not only train you but will keep in contact and motivate you to come in even when you don’t want to. If you are interested in training with me, or joining my gym with a friend go to shaddockmma.com and fill out the contact form. I will give you a FREE 30 minute session with me.
Fear, we’ve all experienced it, especially when it comes to joining a fitness or martial arts center. We call it procrastination, but it’s really just fear. Some are fear of looking stupid (don’t know how to use the equipment). There is fear of looking like a Klutz. There is what is termed physique anxiety( afraid you’ll look too fat, too skinny or otherwise). There is also fear of the high pressure sale. With a lot of gyms and martial arts studios these fears are justified but not at my gym.
At Shaddock MMA Fitness I have decided to give every NEW member a FREE 30 minute session with me in which I explain how to use all the equipment in class. As far as the physique anxiety goes I encourage anyone to come to one of my classes. and just watch. We have people of all shapes and sizes, ages and walks of life. For the final fear, high pressure sales, I do all sales and service. I don’t believe in high pressure sales. You will not be pressured.
I have a pretty lofty goal myself. My goal is to get Carroll County Fit, one person at a time. This April we will be celebrating my 10th anniversary in business. Go to shaddockmma.com and fill out the contact form. I will contact you for your FREE, no obligation, 30 minute training session.
