I was watching a blog by John Hackleman, legendary coach of Chuck Liddel. In his latest blog John poses the question is your art a martial art a partial art? Now I am paraphrasing but he states that for a martial art to be a complete art it has to have 4 components. A striking art (boxing or Muay Thai), a wrestling art for take downs and break downs, jiujitsu for submissions, and just as importantly you need to incorporate fitness as part or your art. There is a quote “fatigue makes cowards of us all.”, and if you are too tired to fight then you cannot defend yourself. If your training is missing one of the 4 components your style is not complete.
When asked what martial art he recommended, Navy Seal Jacko Willink recommended in this order “Brazilian jiujitsu, followed by western boxing, Muay Thai, and wrestling(the type you see in the Olympics, not the WWE-No disrespect to the WWE).
At Shaddock MMA Fitness we like to do train in all of the elements of martial arts. Just To Name A Few. Our Iron Box class is a great cardiovascular and strength training class as well as in all of our martial arts classes we drill conditioning. Our Kids Gaijin Ryu Jiujitsu class combines basic calestenics, the striking arts with the grappling arts so the children are well rounded.

Kids today are different from when you and I grew up. I can remember being outside most of the day, on a bike playing in the woods etc. We played football and baseball with the other neighborhood kids. Todays generation is much different. With cell phones, Ipods, and video games it’s no wonder our kids are less active. “The United States landed 47th out of 50 nations when comparing fitness results among the world’s children, with Canada coming in 19th — a far better result than their neighbors to the south — based on data in the study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. ”
Well at my gym I offer a variety of activities for the kids. The younger kids do our kids MMA class which offers a variety of martial arts through games and skill drills. In the past motivation was never a problem. I was always training for an event or had a goal. From making the football team, to winning the states at wrestling, to winning the Golden Gloves championships. There was always something to shoot for, so to get up and run and lift was no problem at all.
As we get older the goals change, they are not quite as sexy. “I want to lose weight”, “I want to lower my cholesterol”, Basically “I don’t want to die”. Well goals like this are important but they aren’t measurable, there seems to be no end game and so it’s just hard to get pumped up for in the morning. All of us, especially former athletes need that push.
One of the best ways to make it easier to get started is to get a workout partner. Someone to push you and make you work harder. Someone to get you up even when you don’t want to someone to push you. I went out and got myself a workout partner Mac. Mac is my Australian cattle dog. Mac wakes me up in the morning to run, and take him on multiple walks/runs throughout the day. Mac is the perfect training partner as he doesn’t care if it’s raining, or what he will get me to run with him anyhow.
If you don’t want to get a dog you can get a friend to train with you, keep you honest. The key is you want to make sure your friend has the same work ethic as you. The other way to go is to get yourself a trainer. I will not only train you but will keep in contact and motivate you to come in even when you don’t want to. Fear, we’ve all experienced it, especially when it comes to joining a fitness or martial arts center. We call it procrastination, but it’s really just fear. Some are fear of looking stupid (don’t know how to use the equipment). There is fear of looking like a Klutz. There is what is termed physique anxiety( afraid you’ll look too fat, too skinny or otherwise). There is also fear of the high pressure sale. With a lot of gyms and martial arts studios these fears are justified but not at my gym.
