Your Not Just A Member, You’re Family at Shaddock MMA Fitness

Recently a couple of new boxing gyms have opened up in Sykesville.  Shaddock MMA Fitness has been in the same location for 10 years now.   I have been asked what is the difference between those gyms and your gym and the main thing I could think about is I don’t have members, I have family.

Before I started Shaddock MMA Fitness I was a manager in the health club business for 20 years some of the biggest chains both locally and nationally.  I think the biggest difference is there was more of a priority set on NEW members not member attendance.  In the big chains you sign up between 50 – 100 people a month and to keep in touch with each member is nearly impossible.   Yesterday I contacted a family to find out that they weren’t in because the kids were sick.  I contacted another member and found outthey had lost a love one.  These are things working in the big health and fitness centers  and boxing gyms I would not have known about .   Does your Owner, manager or sales associate call you when you have neglected to show?  I do contact my members on a regular basis.  I know that 90 % of reaching your goals is just showing up, the more people I can get to show up the more people that will get fit.  The more people get fit the happier they will be and they will stay a member.

My goal is to get the Sykesville/Eldersburg are fit one person at a time.  I hope you will come join one of our classes. It’s not just a great workout but a social gathering of friends who help inspire one another and joke together to make the workout not seem as tough.  Before you join one of these boxing chains, I encourage you to check out my gym and just see what we are all about.  I think you will enjoy your stay.  Contact me if you are interested.

Keep your hands up,

Coach John  “Bones” Shaddock

Are Your Kids Getting Fit?

Kids today are different from when you and I grew up.  I can remember being outside most of the day, on a bike playing in the woods etc.  We played football and baseball with the other neighborhood kids. Todays generation is much different.  With cell phones, Ipods, and video games it’s no wonder our kids are less active. “The United States landed 47th out of 50 nations when comparing fitness results among the world’s children, with Canada coming in 19th — a far better result than their neighbors to the south — based on data in the study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. ”

Well at my gym I offer a variety of activities for the kids.  The younger kids do our kids MMA class which offers a variety of martial arts through games and skill drills.  For the for mature teenage kids they can do our boxing fitness classes.  The beauty of our program is in it’s flexibility.   The maximum agreement is ONLY for 3 months.  We also offer affordable memberships for kids that can only come in once or twice a week.  If you are looking to get your kids active fill out the contact form on  I look forward to having your kids come take class.

Teaching Boxing Since 1987, Shaddock Teaches Boxing Fitness In Sykesville, MD

There have been a lot of boxing gyms popping up in Maryland lately.   When choosing one you want to choose carefully.  First off, experience will help.  Now we know most people aren’t planning on stepping through the ropes anytime soon, but doesn’t it make sense to learn the correct form when learning to box. Not only do you want to learn from someone who has boxed but also someone who has coached fighters.  The last thing you want is someone who has some fitness experience.  You will get all of these at Shaddock MMA Fitness.

In 1987 John “Bones” Shaddock a Golden Gloves boxer was working at a health club in Vermont.  He had been asked by his older brother Chris to help out teaching his brothers Boxercise class.  Shaddock, a New England Diamond Belt Boxing Champion eventually left his brother’s gym in Vermont and taught at multiple gyms up and down the East coast.  John didn’t only have boxing experience but worked as a trainer being certified in fitness training and plyometrics through N.A.H.F.  Coach Shaddock has worked with amateur and professional boxers and MMA fighters helping them get ready for fights and even working their corners.

In 2008 John opened Shaddock MMA Fitness and began teaching Fitbox.  As the school grew he added Girlbox (womens only), IronBox (boxing and circuit training) , and GrappleBox (boxing and submission wrestling).  These are unique classes that you won’t find anywhere else.  They are always changing and evolving so the customer gets the best results.

If you are interested in getting fit and learning basic self defense come in to Shaddock MMA Fitness.  Go to and fill out the contact form.  You will be glad you did.

If You Love Boxing, And Are Looking For A Place To Train In Eldersburg, Go To Shaddock MMA Fitness

Shaddock MMA Fitness although small has been around since 2008.  To understand it’s longevity is to understand the owner.

Coach Shaddock began his boxing career in 1984 boxing in Golden Gloves competitions in New England.  At age 19 John began his career in the health club business working with his brothers.   When his oldest brother, one of the owners, couldn’t teach his boxercise class, John subbed in.

Over the years John had set his own path in the fitness business working in Vermont, North Carolina and eventually Maryland.  Taking the basics of boxercise and adding his own spin Shaddock developed Fitbox and taught it in Ric Flair’s Golds gym and Brick Bodies.  Being a NAHF certified trainer and Vermont State bodybuilding finalist, John took his weight training experience and developed IronBox circuit training class.

Coach Shaddock wanted to develop boxing class that included his grappling experience. As a freshman in high school he took 3rd in the NY State private school wrestling championships.  At an older age he received his purple belt in Gaijin Ryu jiujitsu, and won the Battle of Baltimore and Maryland Open grappling championships.  So for conditioning his most recent creation is GrappleBox.

Shaddock MMA Fitness is not a chain or a franchise.  It is a small business in Maryland that works to go above and beyond developing the best classes in the area.  If you want a real unique class than you must try a class at Shaddock MMA Fitness.  Contact me for a FREE 30 minute training session just go to and fill out the contact form.

Shaddock MMA Fitness Is Revolutionizing Gyms In Carroll County Maryland

I was in the health club business for close to 20 years, and there are a lot of things I always said I would change if I ever got my own gym.  After close to 10 years of owning my own  martial arts and fitness business I am finally at a point where I can change them for the better.  When you join Shaddock MMA Fitness now you will notice some changes not offered by other gyms.

NO LONG TERM CONTRACTS- One of the things that I felt was bad for the customer, was the long term contracts for customers, especially for the ones who end up dropping off.  At Shaddock MMA Fitness all of our memberships are short term.  We have nothing longer than 3 months at a time. I feel it’s my responsibility to keep you as a member.

PAY FOR WHAT YOU USE- At most health clubs whether your in the club everyday or in the club once per week you pay the same amount of money.  That doesn’t seem fair.  At Shaddock MMA Fitness we have memberships for one day per week, two days per week or unlimited  use memberships.  We give you the flexibility to use the gym as much or as little you want. This is the way it should be, and the way it is at my gym.

ORIGINAL CLASSES YOU WON’T FIND ANYWHERE ELSE- With classes like Fitbox, IronBox, GirlBox and GrappleBox it makes us the most unique gym in the area.  I change the classes periodically to keep the customer from getting bored with their workout.

So to get started all you need to do is go to and fill out the contact form.  After you fill out the form I will contact you to set up a time for a FREE 30 minute training session to orient you on the equipment.

If You’ve Never Done A Boxing Fitness Class Before But Always Wanted To Try!

I have owned Shaddock MMA and Fitness for close to ten years.  The gym was founded on my boxing fitness class.  What I have found over the years is a lot of people were not coming in because they were afraid to try the class.  The were scared they would look stupid because they don’t know how to how to use the equipment.  I understand that people don’t  want to look like a klutz and because of that I have designed the Beginner Boxing Clinic.

This Saturday at 11:15 AM I will be teaching a Beginner Boxing Clinic at Shaddock MMA Fitness.  The course will go over basic footwork, how to properly throw a punch, how to hit the bags correctly, and all at an easy going pace so everyone can keep up no matter what your fitness level.  The beauty of this is that it will prepare all participants to be able to come into any of my boxing fitness classes (Fitbox, Girlbox, IronBox and GrappleBox), and feel comfortable doing the class.

Just go to and fill out the contact form.  Then come in this Saturday at 11:15 and come and take the class.  Wear comfortable clothing and since we don’t have a water fountain you will want to bring a water or a Gatorade.  You do not wear shoes on our boxing mat so be prepared to workout barefoot or in socks.  I look forward to seeing you Saturday.

Keep your hands up,

Coach John “Bones” Shaddock
