In the small town of Sykesville, MD is a small boxing gym they call “Sykesville’s best kept secret.” Shaddock MMA Fitness is a small MMA fitness gym. There are a lot of fly by night boxing gyms that have opened up as of late, but here are a few reasons you may want to consider a local boxing fitness gym.

Once you are a member our classes are small, imagine a gym where like the show Cheers “Everybody knows your name.” You won’t feel like just a member but as a part of a family. Everyone is helpful and there are know egos in the gym, just people trying to get fit.

This weekend I achieved one of the many goals on my bucket list. Seems silly but one of the goals was to run the stairs that Rocky did in the movie. I have been fortunate enough to achieve a lot of what I set out to do. Four years ago I flew across to Latvia in Europe and was one of only 10 or so Americans to fight in the Team fighting championships. Even though I was 46 at the time, I was getting up every morning at 4 am running and training. I had set an impossible goal and did it, and you can too.
This past year has been a rough one. Not only did my Mom pass away, and soon afterward, my father in law passed as well. As devastating as this was, in reflection it taught me to never stop dreaming. what I am saying to you is life is short, follow your dreams as you don’t know what day will be your last. Keeping yourself fit should be a priority for you. We all tend to prioritize everything else but our health and well being but that is the first thing you should focus on.
I have a goal for my business that I hope you can help me with. I am looking to make Carroll County fit one person at a time. Now I have a small martial arts studio, and compared to most fitness centers even smaller but the goal is to get Sykesville/Eldersburg on a fitness program. I hope to have 100 members by 2019, a lofty but attainable one. We are a small gym but we make up for it in customer service, creativity and a fun atmosphere.
This trip has recently inspired me to set some more outrageous personal goals for myself (don’t tell my wife). I hope training with others is something I can be doing for the rest of my life. Won’t you join me at my gym here in Sykesville/Eldersburg MD. I think you will be glad you did. Go to Shaddockmma.com and fill out the contact form. I will call you myself and set up an appointment to meet and see if we can help you reach your goals.
In an age of magic phones that seem to do everything for us, Amongst other things entertain us constantly, there is a lack in human interaction. With self driving cars, online shopping, and on demand movies it’s a wonder people will ever leave their homes in the future. Shaddock MMA Fitness has got a way to get you and your family to actively interact again.
One of the biggest concerns today is the fitness of America. We get fatter and fatter every year. The addition of new technology has not helped. A new trend at my gym has been families that are doing group training. Whether they show up for a class or have a private session it’s been nice to see families interacting in the gym. I have no electronic devices or high tech sound system ( i’m stuck in 70’s and 80’s Rock and Roll) . We have old fashioned sweat and tears mixed with weights and boxing leather. It’s great to see different generations training together on the same equipment and enjoying it. Your family will learn fitness and basic self defense, a necessity in this day and age.
So when you want to think of something different for the family to do, contact me at shaddockmma.com. They do say “A family that trains together stays together.” Contact me for a free 30 minute fitness session and equipment orientation with the family. You’ll be glad you did.
For those who don’t already know, I am the owner of Shaddock MMA Fitness in Sykesville, MD. We have the best boxing fitness program in Carroll County Maryland.
Even though this is the case, as an owner I did notice that people have been hesitating to move forward and join my gym. I have gone out of my way to design memberships that will overcome any obstacle that could keep someone from joining. If you are considering joining but have concerns read on.
TOO MUCH MONEY–Money is usually the biggest obstacle that people come up with for the reason they can’t join. We have added new memberships that will fit everyone’s budget. Our most economical membership cost as little at $1.20 per day.
I DON’T WANT TO COMMIT TO A YEAR OR TWO- Most people are upset about doing long term commitments at fitness centers. A lot of times they commit for a short time and then get billed even though they no longer use the gym. At Shaddock MMA the longest commitment is 3 months.
COMPETITION- In the area you will not find a more experienced boxing fitness instructor than myself. I was a two time VT State Golden Gloves finalist and the New England Diamond Belt boxing champion. I have been teaching boxing fitness for 30 years. As a USA certified boxing coach I have trained and cornered many boxing and MMA fighters. I was involved in the fitness industry for most of my life. I am an NAHF certified personal trainer.
If you want to train at a boxing gym with a trainer who knows boxing look no further than Shaddock MMA Fitness. Come in and try a FREE 30 minute session with me. I will show you the basics and how to hit the bags so you feel more comfortable in your first class. Go to shaddockmma.com and fill out the contact form and I will set up an appointment with you.
The Money crashers blog stated that the 5 benefits of a boxing fitness class are
Enhanced Cardiovascular Health
Improved Total-Body Strength
Better Hand-Eye Coordination
Improved Body Composition
Well Shaddock MMA Fitness does focus on all of these and I will show you how.
Enhanced Cardiovascular Health- All of the classes at Shaddock MMA Fitness focus on cardiovascular health. We have a variety of classes to get your heart pumping. We have FITBOX, IRONBOX, GIRLBOX AND GRAPPLEBOX, each is a great cardio workout.
Improved Total-Body Strength- Our Fitbox and Girlbox classes build body strength through exercises like push ups and sit ups. GrappleBox uses functional exercises that relate to grappling to build strength. IronBox uses traditional and non- traditional weight exercises to build muscle and strength.
Better Hand-Eye Coordination- This is probably the biggest area that separates Shaddock MMA from the competition. While shadow boxing and heavy bag training can help with hand-eye coordination, there is no substitute for the light bags. At Shaddock MMA Fitness we not only have a variety of different heavy bags, but we have speed bags, double end bags and slipping bags which focus on hand eye coordination.
Decreased Stress- Working out in general will reduce your stress level, but nothing will get rid of your stress like punching out a heavy bag.
Improved Body Composition- Although people say they want to lose weight, ideally they want an improved body composition. What that means is low fat and increased toned muscle. All of the classes at Shaddock MMA Fitness will achieve that.
There have been a lot of boxing gyms popping up in Maryland lately. When choosing one you want to choose carefully. First off, experience will help. Now we know most people aren’t planning on stepping through the ropes anytime soon, but doesn’t it make sense to learn the correct form when learning to box. Not only do you want to learn from someone who has boxed but also someone who has coached fighters. The last thing you want is someone who has some fitness experience. You will get all of these at Shaddock MMA Fitness.
In 1987 John “Bones” Shaddock a Golden Gloves boxer was working at a health club in Vermont. He had been asked by his older brother Chris to help out teaching his brothers Boxercise class. Shaddock, a New England Diamond Belt Boxing Champion eventually left his brother’s gym in Vermont and taught at multiple gyms up and down the East coast. John didn’t only have boxing experience but worked as a trainer being certified in fitness training and plyometrics through N.A.H.F. Coach Shaddock has worked with amateur and professional boxers and MMA fighters helping them get ready for fights and even working their corners.
In 2008 John opened Shaddock MMA Fitness and began teaching Fitbox. As the school grew he added Girlbox (womens only), IronBox (boxing and circuit training) , and GrappleBox (boxing and submission wrestling). These are unique classes that you won’t find anywhere else. They are always changing and evolving so the customer gets the best results.
If you are interested in getting fit and learning basic self defense come in to Shaddock MMA Fitness. Go to Shaddockmma.com and fill out the contact form. You will be glad you did.
In the past motivation was never a problem. I was always training for an event or had a goal. From making the football team, to winning the states at wrestling, to winning the Golden Gloves championships. There was always something to shoot for, so to get up and run and lift was no problem at all.
As we get older the goals change, they are not quite as sexy. “I want to lose weight”, “I want to lower my cholesterol”, Basically “I don’t want to die”. Well goals like this are important but they aren’t measurable, there seems to be no end game and so it’s just hard to get pumped up for in the morning. All of us, especially former athletes need that push.
One of the best ways to make it easier to get started is to get a workout partner. Someone to push you and make you work harder. Someone to get you up even when you don’t want to someone to push you. I went out and got myself a workout partner Mac. Mac is my Australian cattle dog. Mac wakes me up in the morning to run, and take him on multiple walks/runs throughout the day. Mac is the perfect training partner as he doesn’t care if it’s raining, or what he will get me to run with him anyhow.
If you don’t want to get a dog you can get a friend to train with you, keep you honest. The key is you want to make sure your friend has the same work ethic as you. The other way to go is to get yourself a trainer. I will not only train you but will keep in contact and motivate you to come in even when you don’t want to. If you are interested in training with me, or joining my gym with a friend go to shaddockmma.com and fill out the contact form. I will give you a FREE 30 minute session with me.
