The Money crashers blog stated that the 5 benefits of a boxing fitness class are
Enhanced Cardiovascular Health
Improved Total-Body Strength
Better Hand-Eye Coordination
Improved Body Composition
Well Shaddock MMA Fitness does focus on all of these and I will show you how.
Enhanced Cardiovascular Health- All of the classes at Shaddock MMA Fitness focus on cardiovascular health. We have a variety of classes to get your heart pumping. We have FITBOX, IRONBOX, GIRLBOX AND GRAPPLEBOX, each is a great cardio workout.
Improved Total-Body Strength- Our Fitbox and Girlbox classes build body strength through exercises like push ups and sit ups. GrappleBox uses functional exercises that relate to grappling to build strength. IronBox uses traditional and non- traditional weight exercises to build muscle and strength.
Better Hand-Eye Coordination- This is probably the biggest area that separates Shaddock MMA from the competition. While shadow boxing and heavy bag training can help with hand-eye coordination, there is no substitute for the light bags. At Shaddock MMA Fitness we not only have a variety of different heavy bags, but we have speed bags, double end bags and slipping bags which focus on hand eye coordination.
Decreased Stress- Working out in general will reduce your stress level, but nothing will get rid of your stress like punching out a heavy bag.
Improved Body Composition- Although people say they want to lose weight, ideally they want an improved body composition. What that means is low fat and increased toned muscle. All of the classes at Shaddock MMA Fitness will achieve that.
There have been a lot of boxing gyms popping up in Maryland lately. When choosing one you want to choose carefully. First off, experience will help. Now we know most people aren’t planning on stepping through the ropes anytime soon, but doesn’t it make sense to learn the correct form when learning to box. Not only do you want to learn from someone who has boxed but also someone who has coached fighters. The last thing you want is someone who has some fitness experience. You will get all of these at Shaddock MMA Fitness.
In 1987 John “Bones” Shaddock a Golden Gloves boxer was working at a health club in Vermont. He had been asked by his older brother Chris to help out teaching his brothers Boxercise class. Shaddock, a New England Diamond Belt Boxing Champion eventually left his brother’s gym in Vermont and taught at multiple gyms up and down the East coast. John didn’t only have boxing experience but worked as a trainer being certified in fitness training and plyometrics through N.A.H.F. Coach Shaddock has worked with amateur and professional boxers and MMA fighters helping them get ready for fights and even working their corners.
In 2008 John opened Shaddock MMA Fitness and began teaching Fitbox. As the school grew he added Girlbox (womens only), IronBox (boxing and circuit training) , and GrappleBox (boxing and submission wrestling). These are unique classes that you won’t find anywhere else. They are always changing and evolving so the customer gets the best results.

In the past motivation was never a problem. I was always training for an event or had a goal. From making the football team, to winning the states at wrestling, to winning the Golden Gloves championships. There was always something to shoot for, so to get up and run and lift was no problem at all.
As we get older the goals change, they are not quite as sexy. “I want to lose weight”, “I want to lower my cholesterol”, Basically “I don’t want to die”. Well goals like this are important but they aren’t measurable, there seems to be no end game and so it’s just hard to get pumped up for in the morning. All of us, especially former athletes need that push.
One of the best ways to make it easier to get started is to get a workout partner. Someone to push you and make you work harder. Someone to get you up even when you don’t want to someone to push you. I went out and got myself a workout partner Mac. Mac is my Australian cattle dog. Mac wakes me up in the morning to run, and take him on multiple walks/runs throughout the day. Mac is the perfect training partner as he doesn’t care if it’s raining, or what he will get me to run with him anyhow.
If you don’t want to get a dog you can get a friend to train with you, keep you honest. The key is you want to make sure your friend has the same work ethic as you. The other way to go is to get yourself a trainer. I will not only train you but will keep in contact and motivate you to come in even when you don’t want to. If you are interested in training with me, or joining my gym with a friend go to shaddockmma.com and fill out the contact form. I will give you a FREE 30 minute session with me.
There are all types of workouts out there now a days. There are a lot of trendy ones like Zumba and Pilates but the one that has stood the test of time is Boxing fitness. There are quite a few reasons why you might want to try a boxing fitness class and here they are.
Boxing Fitness is one of the best all around full body workouts around. According to factsof health.com “a boxer’s training session will work nearly every muscle in the body, it focuses on the muscles of the upper arms, core, chest, hips and calves”. Most people don’t realize that in boxing you work your legs and core as much if not more than your upper body.
A lot of people go mainly for weight loss so burning calories is important. According to factsofhealth.com “a boxer will burn between 420 and 650 calories in a 60-minute boxing workout,” If you want to get the best bank for your buck go with a boxing fitness class.
Right now Shaddock MMA Fitness is offering a chance to try a FREE 30 minute session to learn how to use the boxing equipment before you do class. All you have to do is go to shaddockmma.com and fill out the contact form to set up your first FREE 30 minute session. I hope to hear from you soon.
Fear, we’ve all experienced it, especially when it comes to joining a fitness or martial arts center. We call it procrastination, but it’s really just fear. Some are fear of looking stupid (don’t know how to use the equipment). There is fear of looking like a Klutz. There is what is termed physique anxiety( afraid you’ll look too fat, too skinny or otherwise). There is also fear of the high pressure sale. With a lot of gyms and martial arts studios these fears are justified but not at my gym.
At Shaddock MMA Fitness I have decided to give every NEW member a FREE 30 minute session with me in which I explain how to use all the equipment in class. As far as the physique anxiety goes I encourage anyone to come to one of my classes. and just watch. We have people of all shapes and sizes, ages and walks of life. For the final fear, high pressure sales, I do all sales and service. I don’t believe in high pressure sales. You will not be pressured.
I have a pretty lofty goal myself. My goal is to get Carroll County Fit, one person at a time. This April we will be celebrating my 10th anniversary in business. This is do to a great and understanding wife and kids, as well as loyal membership base. I want to invite you in to experience my gym and become part of the Shaddock MMA Fitness family. Go to shaddockmma.com and fill out the contact form. I will contact you for your FREE, no obligation, 30 minute training session.
If you are looking for a workout to burn off lots of calories then you need to look for a boxing fitness class. At Shaddock MMA Fitness are fitness classes all include some form of boxing fitness. We don’t just do shadow boxing like the “Tae Bo” style of class but actually punch bags like at a traditional boxing gym. As most boxing fitness classes are taught by aerobics instructors, the classes at Shaddock MMA Fitness are taught by former Golden gloves boxer and New England Diamond Belt champion John Shaddock.
The Live Strong Blog says that a boxing class can burn up to “800 calories”. I invite you to come try any of my classes for a great workout. We have FitBoxing, IronBoxing, and GrappleBoxing. Come in and try one of our classes and find out what it’s all about. Just go to our website shaddockmma.com for our schedule of classes.

By now a lot of my social media friends who are Mayweather fans think I am nuts. I have been analyzing this fight for quite some time. Some may ask what my experience is. I had fought competitively for 8 years was a two time finalist in the Vermont Golden Gloves and was the 1989 New England Diamond Belt Boxing Champion. As a mixed martial artist I competed in the Teams Fighting Championships in Latvia ( 5 on 5 fighting).
Many will argue with boxing only rules it does seem like a mismatch, and if Floyd does what Floyd usually does in calling all of the shots it may be. But if Conor and his team can work the negotiations this could be an extremely competitive fight and here’s how.
Glove Size– Welter weights (147 pounds) can fight with 8 ounce gloves. Anything above Welter weight is 10 ounce gloves. If they fight at Welter advantage McGregor.
Glove Type– The Reyes gloves are made with horse hair. They are known as the “punchers glove”. If McGregor is allowed this type of glove advantage McGregor.
Size of ring– I do believe that the smaller the ring the bigger advantage for Conor, but he does fight in Octagon which is bigger than a ring. But a smaller ring will help McGregor be able to get to Mayweather more often.
This is probably the biggest factor. Who the referee is will make a huge difference. Floyd picks the referee, Conor will not be able to get rough in close situations. He needs a referee that will be let them fight on the inside.
Other factors are the size difference. Conor is taller, has a reach advantage and by fight time will be the much heavier man. If the negotiations are worked correctly this could be a very interesting fight.
Keep your hands up,
John “Bones” Shaddock
